The 4th of July is cause for celebration all over the U.S. If you’re partaking in the celebrations, or even if you’re not, there are some things to consider to keep your pets safe on this national holiday.
There can be lots of new sights and sounds and smells for our pets when people gather for celebrations and cookouts and fireworks displays, so be sure they can handle all the new stresses without freaking out. If they’re easily excitable, the best bet may be to keep them indoors for the evening.
Independence Day is often a day of indulgence for many pets what with all of the hamburgers and steaks and hotdogs on unattended grills. If you don’t want you pets’ diet to be turned on its head for a day, then make sure beforehand that all of your guests know whether or not it’s acceptable to feed them scraps, etc. And always keep an eye on the alcoholic drinks since just a little alcohol can wreak havoc with smaller pets if they should get too curious.
Statistically, a lot of pets go missing around the 4th of July each year, and it’s because of the fireworks. With all of the bangs and loud noises associated with fireworks displays, some pets just get overly anxious and run off, only to discover that they can’t find their way back home. So, in addition to making sure that your pets have adequate identification tags on them, also make sure that they have a place where they can feel safe during the festivities. It may be a good idea to round them all up and get them inside before lighting the first fuse.
