With summer coming to an end and fall approaching, you might be looking forward to the cooler weather, the start of school, and the beautiful foliage. Chances are, your dog enjoys the fall too! Here are some fall safety tips to consider to make this autumn the happiest and healthiest for your canine:
- You or your children might be stocking up on school supplies such as pencils, pens, and glue sticks. Usually these items won’t cause serious harm to your pet unless they’re ingested in large quantities, but they certainly can cause intestinal blockages or choking, so make sure your dog doesn’t have access to them.
- Rodenticides are commonly used during the fall to rid your house of the rodents seeking shelter from the cooler weather. Rodenticides are highly toxic to pets, so use with utmost caution.
- Fall and spring the seasons of mushrooms. Most mushrooms are fine, but a small percentage can cause serious harm if ingested. The best way to deal with this is to keep your dog away from areas where mild mushrooms grow, and call Animal Poison Control if you see your dog eat mushrooms.
- Pets that live outdoors or spend a lot of time outdoors should be given more food to generate body heat during colder seasons.
