Tips for Homemade Dog Treats

Making your own treats can be a fun reward for your dog. Not only is it a great way to add some variety to your dog’s diet, but making your own treats gives you control over the quality and quantity of ingredients. In addition, it can be a cost-effective decision. It’s easy to use the internet to find some homemade dog treat recipes (such as this one, this one, and this one!) but here are some tips to keep in mind as you browse:

  • Make sure you honor any allergies your dog has to specific ingredients, and avoid any ingredient your dog has reacted poorly to previously.
  • Be sure to refrigerate or freeze treats according to instructions, and label them with the date they were made.
  • Avoid the standard ingredients and foods that are toxic to dogs: chocolate, onions, raisins and grapes, macadamia nuts, walnuts, etc. Excess salt can lead to kidney issues, and dogs just don’t need salt on their food. Also limit cheese and other dairy products if your dog is lactose intolerant.

If in any doubt, always ask a veterinarian. Otherwise, enjoy!
